Have you ever tried Egyptian Magic? I have been using it for about 2 months on my eyes and eye area and have noticed a big difference in my lashes! They are longer and fuller. I also use Egyptian magic for a moisturizer on face & hands when I am feeling a bit dry. It is made w. all natural ingredients and seem like it is cult favorite! (http://www.egyptianmagic.com/)

Hi! super random but I always read cara’s blog and love it so much but also saw she didnt have a mascara listed. I joined a cosmetic company that sells a 3d fiber lash mascara that is all natural based! all their products are gluten free! the mascara has recently gotten really popular and makes it look like you have fake eye lashes on without actually having to get all messy with the glue and lashes 🙂 feel free to browse the products here: https://www.youniqueproducts.com/MercedesW/party/378641/view

i’d really love to hear what you think about these products, cara. i’ve been following your blog for a while now and have never seen you post anything about them!

I tried that younique products 3D mascara and I was supper disappointed. Not only did it not look any better than my Benefit “They’re Real” mascara, but even though I followed the directions, the fibers shed throughout the day leaving little black spots all over my face. After some argument, they finally agreed to accept my return, but 7 months later the refund still hasn’t hit my account. I’m out $18 for the mascara that I don’t own and another $4 for return shipping. Glue on false lashes look a lot better; they get easier to apply with practice. The 3D stuff made my lashes looking the tiniest bit longer, but it was super clumpy looking 🙁

I was also super disappointed with Younique mascara. I know there a lot of people that sell it and are interested in making a profit, and nobody can fault that, but that said, I feel like the mascara is sub-par. Moreover, the fibers are messy, don’t adhere well, fall off and get in your eyes. I tried it for a bit, and my eyes were constantly blood shot and irritated from the fibers. I agree that you are better off with false lashes, or extensions.

thank you. for a few things really. for being honest. finding great products. being the guinea pig. for finding inexpensive, good alternatives 🙂 i get so discouraged when the beauty world is out of reach in the land of $60 dior .0075 oz creams and $25 spooly brushes. not that they aren’t great products, but its nice to know i can get close with something more in my budget. so, thank you.

Actually, if you go and compare the colors of the Chocolate Soleil versus the Milk Chocolate Soleil, there isn’t that much of a difference. My skin is really, really fair, and at the time I was looking for the Milk Chocolate, Sephora was sold out, and after realizing they were only slightly different, I went with the regular Cocolate Soleil (because it was in stock) and it works fine for me, as well as I know people with darker skin it works well for. If your skin is very tan into dark, The Balm’s Hot Mama would be a great option for you!

Cara! I just found an amazing color for lips!! It is a drugstore find, too. It is a berry mauve lip color that is rich and complimenting. It is Revlon’s Colorstay Ultimate Suede in Supermodel 045. Even after my lips absorb the moisture, the color remains making your lips seem like they have this natural plump color to them. Seems like something a VS model would keep in their bag!!! Reminds me of how the YSL lipstick color just clings to your lips for the longest time after your lips steal the moisture 🙂 Sigh. Makeup love.

Abi, I have been using the Thomas Roth (orange colored) cleanser for a couple years now and it is the only cleanser i’ve ever stuck with this long. it is pricey but i buy it on ebay and the size is really large so it lasts a long time, making it a better find than going through drugstore brands. i used to get facials regularly and thanks to this cleanser (i also like their peel pads) i haven’t needed a facial in like 2 years! also, i used to have good luck with PanOxyl (from the drugstore). I liked the bar version.

Try a product with Benzoyl Peroxide as the Active ingredient. The best thing for my cystic acne was a prescription cream called BenzaClin (benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin), but while I have been looking for a new doctor my prescription ran out. It turns out the benzoyl peroxide is what’s working. I used to use Clear and Clears version but saw other brands have come out with creams too and tried out Clearasil’s version and It works SO MUCH BETTER! My face cleared so fast!
I also wash my face with Neutrogena grapefruit wash (it smells good), then wipe my face down with hydrogen peroxide (antiseptic). I saw it on a YouTube video/blog one time and it helps kille the bacteria that causes acne in the first place. Also tea tree oil helps out on breakouts if you’ve picked at them (best but hard to find is a neosporinlike gel with tea tree oil in it called MelaGel. It’s made by a company called Melaleuca which you have to order from someone who sells it like Avon, but I’ve seen it on Amazon before. That stuff is AMAZING for any open wound or burn because it heals so quickly. So if I get impatient and pop a pimple at least I don’t have to live with the repercussions for long.
      Hope this helps you!

Have you tried the Rodan and Fields micro e? I love it. I use that without any of the other cleansers/lotions etc. The cost upfront is kind of hefty but it’s all I use and gives me the same results as going and getting a facial so it has more than paid for itself. (not a consultant).

-What’s your favorite product to use or maybe just way to wash your make-up brushes?
-Do you have a preferred shampoo/conditioner for color-treated hair?
-At SNAP you talked about a “hair spray for your face” … what was that again?

Aveda used to have a conditioner they sold that you could customize with hair tint in it. I really liked that they could add violet to it to help keep the orange out of my red color treated hair. They no longer do this and have been hoping for something that would work just as well. Any ideas on that? Thanks!

Hello 🙂 I have recently been having trouble finding a light weight foundation. I love the look of Kat Von D Tattoo – I normally only wear this when I’m going to dinner, a night out, ect… but for the summer I would like something more light weight and natural looking for everyday wear. I have gone to a few counters and read your blog and I have yet to find something I love. I tried to do the Makeup Forever HD that you suggest but after several attempts I could not find a color to match my skin tone. They are mostly cool tones and I am very warm/olive toned. A girl at Sephora suggested I try Becca full coverage foundation. Have you tried/heard things about this product?

also, do you suggest anything else? for long wear in warm weather, light weight but flawless looking? I may be asking for too much but since you are so great with everything else I thought you would be the perfect one to ask.

    Thank you!!

For a lightweight foundation try Dior Nude Serum (be sure to set with powder), or if you want a really, really cool alternative try Color FX drops–they are drops that you can add to any liquid: lotion, sunscreen, primer, whatever. If you just add one drop you will have a lighter foundation–you can add coverage as you increase drops.

There are also products like Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer for lightweight and light coverage.

I LOVE your blog and I love products just as much as you! Have you tried Serious Serum? My Esthetician recommended it to me because I had such a problem with ingrown hairs on my bikini area from waxing or shaving. It cleared it up like woah! Then I started using it on my face and it has made an incredible difference! I put it on at night on clean skin and then I actually layer the Glam Glow Thirsty Mud ( I also love this product) on top and then I sleep. It has completely changed the texture of my skin. Got rid of all my dumb blemishes and has smoothed my crows feet. It’s amazing. You can get from http://www.seriousserum.com. You will love!

Oh! I am also obsessed with the Marc Jacobs bronzer. It’s so expensive that I wish I didn’t love it, but I got it at Sephora and it has lasted me for months and months. It’s the most natural bronzer I have ever used.
    Thank you!

I am totally looking for a great foundation for oily skin! I have a problem with a lot of foundations in that I’m in my early 40’s, have an oily T-zone, and have neutral toned fair skin.
Also, I have discovered some new lipgloss by Milani (cheap drugstore brand) that is called “Brilliant Shine” lip gloss. I am really liking the shade “Luminous”. I have purchased all kinds of expensive lipgloss at Sephora & department stores, and end up returning all of it because the colors are not flattering &/or they don’t stay on for more than 20-30 min. This Milani stays looking nice (not perfect, but nice) for several hours, and it’s only $5.99.

For a mascara try Maybelline’s Lash Discovery. I have sad lashes and this mascara makes a difference. It has a small brush so it’s good for bottom lashes too. I layer it on then use whatever other mascara for separating/lengthening for a second coat. None of the expensive brands have come close to the volume I get from this. A solid but expensive stand alone mascara is YSL Babydoll it will be perfect if your lashes have any oomph of their own but even my thin sparse lashes look good with just this. (I do like adding another brand on top for more drama though lol)

Hi Cara and other possible commenters! 🙂

I know a lot of people probably ask this, to the point that you most likely will have an automatic answer ready, but I’m extremely pale/fair. I’m talking, I’ve tried EVERYTHING. Every foundation and or concealer I’ve ever tried is too dark for me. Most of them look good/okay in the store lighting, but the second I go near any natural light or a professional makeup artist’s light, I’M ORANGE.

Current list of all the brands I’ve tried:
Every drugstore brand imaginable (Elf, revlon, neutogena, maybeline, NYX, etc.)
All the high end (D&G, Chanel, YSL, Estee Lauder, Clinique, etc.)
    MAC
    Nars
    Makeup For Ever
    Naked/Urban Decay
    Kat Von D
    Bare Minerals
    Benefit
    Bobbi Brown
    Cover FX
    Dermablend
    Josie Maran
    Smashbox
    Japonesque
    Tarte
    Laura Geller
    Laura Mercier
    IT Cosmetics
(tried in all kinds of mediums: cremes, liquid, powders, sticks, etc.)
Mixers: mac face & body in white, makeup for ever liquid pigment

I could put the whole list up, but I’m pretty sure you get the gist. Add on the facts: combo skin, oily t-zone, redness in t-zone, purple/blue under-eye circles (from being pale), plus acne. The one thing I did find is that Makeup For Ever makes a white pigment you can add to things, which is nice, but it takes away the amount of coverage of the product you add it to (it’s the best mixer I’ve found so far). I’m really interested in trying your HAC pack Cara as well to see if your fair one is light enough for me.

I’m looking for a medium coverage foundation and a high coverage concealer(s) for under-eye and acne spots, things that I can add a white pigment to to make them lighter OR that are lighter than any of the possible products listed above. Also if anyone has any other mixers that they’ve heard of for us pale people, I’d love to hear about it. Anything that anyone has to share for fair-skinned makeup would be amazing.

Sorry it’s so long. Thanks everyone! 🙂

Help! My skin is a hot mess. I’ve got it ALL: Slight acne scars, red splochiness around my cheeks and nose, freckles, uneven skin tone and to top it off some lovely hereditary dark circles. I’m slightly tan because of summer so I just use the Kat Von D tattoo concealer to cover my blemishes on my chin area, and a bit of the Too faced Milk chocolate bronzer. I skip all foundation since my past experiences with any kind had me looking like a scary ghost.

I don’t even need to wear make-up anymore, since I have nothing but even, bright skin. Never thought I would be able to say that 🙂

That is amazing! Did you have acne-prone skin? I’m 32 and have adult acne, a lot of bumps that appear are cystic and HURT. What was your complexion like prior to using these products?

Do you have a good recommendation for an eyelash curler that won’t pull your eyelashes out? I hate this and besides mine is 10 years old and literally falling apart.

Okay, I hope you check these comments often. I am almost out of my cheap drugstore dry shampoo and have been searching for a good one. I was about to by the Lush No Drought dry shampoo because people have been RAVING about it, until I read this and you recommended the L’Oreal. Have you tried Lush No Drought? If so what were your thoughts? Thanks!!

Hi Cara. I see you use a hot tools curling iron in your hair videos. It obviously works well for you bc your hair is beautiful. I was wondering if you have ever tried the Nume curling wands? I have very fine hair that has never held a curl – no matter what I did. I recently got a Nume magic wand and cant express how much I love it. It is super easy to use and the curl lasts for days. Seriously. Days. I am in no way affiliated with the company – just thought I would let you all know about it in the hopes that someone else may fall in love too!

The links to the Maskcara HAC foundation are not valid so I’m thinking you might not be selling it right now? (Sorry, relatively new reader but now LOVE your blog). Anyway, if those are not available can you recommend another? Dying to try the technique but convinced Im using the wrong products.

Hi Cara, I was surprised that you didn’t list Living Proof Hair products. I have always had great hair, but someone gave me a sample of L/P & I am hooked! I never let my hair go more than 2 days without shampooing, but now I can go 4-5 days & it stays fresh & gorgeous. I have a natural wave in back of my hair that I always had to struggle with to get the straight look, bbut now I spray with their Straight spray & my entire head is straight & wonderful. I encourage all to try it, straight & curly.

I’ve been using pure rosehip oil. While I don’t have ‘brown spots’ I have loads of freckles, and I only have a few acne scars, but I can tell a big difference in the short period of time I’ve been using it. My skin looks brighter and healthier, my coloration is all around better and the few scars that I have seem faded. I no longer have to cover them with concealer, just light foundation does the job. My friend that turned me onto this has adult acne, and scars, and this made a noticeable difference in her skin after just a week. It works better than any serum she has tried, prescription or otherwise.

Cara! I love the Loreal Gel Liner, especially for the top water line, but I have a big problem with it migrating to the lower water line and beneath my eyes, so I end up looking like I haven’t slept in days. Any suggestions? Could this also be a problem with mascara? Is there a certain brand of mascara or some sort of primer or trick that I could use to combat this issue? By the way, I LOVE your blog and your IIID foundation, I loved the first version and the second generation is even better!

For people needing more affordable options, I know I have seen other posts on Cara’s blog here listing such items, but here are a few additions, or ideas if you don’t feel like searching:

Primer/ pore minimizer: Maybelline Baby Skin $5 is almost as good as POREfessional, and I actually prefer it in the winter when my skin is super dry.

Concealer: Hard Candy Glamoflauge. It’s a little heavier than I prefer, but inexpensive, like $6 at walmart. It may not look as dewy as Kat Von D or It Cosmetics, but it conceals well. Best drugstore brand I tried. Their tinted moisturizer is good as well; nice light-medium coverage; for me the perfect companion the heavy concealer.

Brow powder: NYC Browser Kit $3 in whatever color looks right for you. I have a hard time finding something to match my brows, this is the only thing meant for brows that I have ever found.
**The only Loreal Antique Brown I could find in stores was sparkly, not matte, otherwise it would have worked, I think. 🙁 Changed formula maybe?**

Eyeshadow: Wet n’ Wild $2-6, looks good and has considerable staying power when combined with ELF shadow primer $3 (ELF also has a primer and sealer duo $3, the primer is not as good as the solo primer, but the sealer does an AMAZING job at keeping any eyeliner in place).

Lips: Nude: Maybelline Color Sensational in Bare All.
Soft pink gloss: ELF Hypershine gloss in Fairy $1
General go to color: ELF Matte Lip Color in Tea Rose $3

Homemade face care products work the best in my experience.

Brushes: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HSE4WJG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I love theses even more than my IT cosmetics dual brush, or my Real Techniques brush, and they are on $10 on amazon (been using mine over a year, still feel soft and new).

In my opinion, if you are going to splurge, do it on a good setting powder (I like the Balm Sexy Mama anti-shine for a sheer finish that won’t cover up my HAC, or PUR minerals 4-1 pressed powder for something with color and coverage. Both can be found at Kohls.com, but sometimes cheaper elsewhere).
Maskcara’s Pearl Illuminator is the one thing that I would say in non-optional! I can’t say enough good things about it. It really makes the difference no matter the other products. And at $9 it’s not that much of a splurge and works better than any other illuminator!
    Hope this helps!

P.S. Most of this is much cheaper in the stores than on Amazon!

Hi Cara! I’ve been reading your blog (which I absolutely LOVE by the way) and haven’t seen you mention much about mascara. I know you love false eyelashes, but what’s your recommendation on a mascara alternative? Have you heard about Younique’s 3D Fiber Mascara? Hi Cara and Maskcara community!

Love everything Cara does and everything about this blog!! So I have just come off of a spout of a year or so of rashes around my eyes and realize it’s related to my gluten allergy. I am about to dive into the realm of gluten free makeup (finally since I haven’t been able to wear any because of these darn allergy rashes!). Was wondering if anyone has any experience or recommendations on products that are hypoallergenic and gluten-free.

Would love any bits of info to help guide my journey!

    Thanks 🙂

If you have tried it, Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Sea Salt spray is amazing. With some others, if I went a little crazy, it was too late and I’d have to wash it out. With this one it’s not a problem, great waves, and it smells good too. I’ve tried expensive and less expensive but this is a deal at under $6.00. Love, love it.

[…] For my latest installment from my Allure Insiders Hair Series I thought it might be nice to sit down and chat about a few of my can’t live without hair products and why I love them so much. As a blogger companies send me hordes of hair product all the time and I always give them a try but it really takes an amazing product to sway me from my tried and true favorites. I am also a total hair minimalist when it comes to product. There is a goo and a spray for things that have never even crossed my mind! I’ve found that (this might be partly because of my hair type – fine) if I use much product it might look good that one night but it will never last for the next day and 9 times out of 10 I’m looking for a shameful amount more longevity than that. I didn’t want this video to be too long so I narrowed it down to the few on my mind that day but if you’d like  a full list of all of my hair favs check out The Prettilist […]

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it does not fail me as much as this one. After all, I know it was my choice to read, however I actually thought you would probably have something helpful to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could possibly fix if you were not too busy looking for attention.
