First things first. My disclaimer:
I hear women concerned about having eyes that are “far too small” all the time.
I don’t know who or where the idea came from that certain things on your face should be big and others should be small.
Who makes these decisions?
Some people have big eyes and others have smaller eyes. Some have big lips others do not.
All it takes is one season of Beverly Hills Housewives to realized that some faces just look better with small lips!
There is not one right answer for everyone here…
but…if you want to play up your eyes and make them look GIGANTIC once in a while, I totally support you in that.
So here’s how you do it:
1. HAC your eyes.
Yep, Highlighting and contouring isn’t just for your cheekbones, it works on your peepers as well. Using Mac Charcoal Brown and a fluffy brush (I;m obsessed with this little kit) I shaded in a high crease right beneath my brow bone and draw it out beyond the end of my eyes. My actual crease is actually much closer to my lash line so when I draw it up and out it created the effect of a larger more prominent eye.
Next I shade fairly low under my bottom lash line. As opposed to a dark black line this will open the eyes up.
I LOVE drawing black liner in my waterline because I like the way it looks and the way it makes my eyes pop, but for making the eyes look big, skip that step:)
2. Draw in a high arch with your brows.
When filling in your brows, try drawing in above the brow on the arch. This makes an eye opening effect and bring the attention right where you want it.
3. Whiten the waterline
Use a light colored pencil to fill in your waterline. I prefer to use off white or cream liners, cause they look more natural and grow your eyeball area without being bright and drawing attention to the actual line, like white can sometimes do.
4. The Lashes…Of course
I added these lash strips to my top lashes, which really helps, but the kicker is the lower lashes. If you you’ve never tried them you need to give it a shot. They take some time and are not an every day thing but for a special occasion they make a HUGE difference. These are my favorite.
1. I dab Duo glue on my hand, with tweezers to hold the cluster I dip the root into the glue
2. After a few seconds to let it get tacky I stick the root into my lash line and hold for a second.
3. I continue the same thing with anything from 3-8 clusters (depending on how dramatic I want it) most people have more under lashes than I do so you will probably need less;)
(I’m planning to do this in a video for any of you who would prefer that to the pictorial)
Enjoy your big huge baby doll eyes!
See ya tomorrow,

August 4, 2013 at 2:50 pmNARS Larger Than Life ‘Rue Bonaparte’ WILL STAY on ur waterline! 🙂 Best fleshy colored eyeliner I’ve EVER used! Pricey but well worth it! (NARS also has white 1 but it’s 2 stark white & I’m fair skinned). Mascara tip: when u take mascara wand/brush out of the tube–use a paper towel 2 wipe ALL of the mascara COMPLETELY OFF the wand–& NOW brush thru ur bottom lashes–there will still b enough remaining in the wand bristles 2 coat the bottom lashes. OR if u’ve tried that already–here’s a few mascaras I use that deposit a very light layer 4 the lower lashes–1-Covergirl clump crusher (make sure it’s the GREEN tube) (2) Maybelline Full ‘N Soft (this one has a wand that’s perfect 4 using the paper towel trick) OR any mascara that is NOT volumizing & ONLY apply just ONE coat of mascara 2 lower lashes. Another tip–I use a dry EXTRA mascara wand (like disposable ones at dept stores or u can buy one–Sonia Kashuk, MAC, etc. sell them) that has never been used (in mascara tube)& after applying mascara–I will use this extra wand 2 lightly brush thru lashes 2 remove any clumps, etc–gives a clean, non-spidery look! 🙂 Hope all this helps! 🙂

June 10, 2014 at 3:47 pmYou can even just THOROUGHLY wash out an old, unused mascara wand with antibacterial soap/detergent and sanitize with rubbing alchohol, etc. I like to use that to comb through my lashes after mascara like you said and also to comb through my brows if I can’t find another brush.
Samantha
September 14, 2013 at 10:03 amSomething I always do is when applying the mascara first, I swipe the wand on the inner rim of the mascara tube, getting all the globs off the wand mostly, and then I always apply to the top lashes before going immediately to the bottoms, WITHOUT dipping wand back in tube..getting most of the mascara on the tops and it makes it so I can get a lighter coating on my lower ones, which makes the difference.

August 4, 2013 at 9:00 amWhen I work on a client, I will put eye primer on the bottom lid as well as the top top to help extend wear. Also, if you don’t rub your eyes try powder on the lash line. You can also use a finishing spray to really lock it all in!

August 1, 2013 at 5:16 amHhaha thank you so much Cara!!! This is wonderful! The only problem with me personally is that whenever I do the white on the bottom waterline it like melts off to th corner of my eve and looks gross. I’m going to try to find an off white that hopefully will look much better?

August 1, 2013 at 6:07 amI am SO incredibly thankful for all that wrote to you asking how to get bigger eyes! I’ve tried all of your face HACing and love it but have stayed away from your eye makeup tips because mine are “too small” and fear that they would look even smaller. (Note: Even the woman at Sephora giggled while saying they were the smallest eyelids she’s ever seen). Thank you, Cara, for giving me potential to be happy with ALL of my features!:) if I do a side by side and like it, I’ll send it to you!

August 1, 2013 at 11:02 amI have read through all your brow posts before and I’m still confused about how to create a higher arch. You just draw in above the arch with your brow powder, right? When I do that, it just makes my eyebrows look really thick. Is there any way to raise the underside of the arch, other than plucking the hair? I’m assuming that you can’t go any higher than the underside of your natural brow, unless you just make your brow thicker by adding height at the top of it. Right?

August 1, 2013 at 11:40 amI love the way you apply the shadow and liner under your eyes but every time I try it melts off quickly, or worse, smears my contacts which I then have to take out and clean after getting my eyes all finished. Please help, do you have any suggestions for contact wearers for using liner and shadow? I don’t even try to line my water line because I can only imagine how that would end up stuck on my contact. Are contact wearers just not allowed to experience this little makeup trick? Does anyone else have this problem???
Rebekah
August 26, 2013 at 7:47 pmI second this! It also doesn’t work with my contacts. Any tips for us?? I might try the liners people recommended and see if they smudge less.

September 21, 2013 at 4:36 pmTry using powder instead of actual pencil liner. It won’t smudge nearly as much. Use a small pointed brush to apply. I think you’ll love it!

Heather
September 21, 2013 at 4:34 pmYes you can reuse lashes. I do all the time. After you remove them just pick the glue off the end and any mascara clumps. There’s no specific length of time, just keep using them until they don’t look nice anymore.

August 2, 2013 at 12:37 pmCara,
I have a few questions to ask you. My hair color is in between blonde and brown. I never know whether to call myself blonde or brunette! I’ve noticed how much you stress to fill in your eye brows and I completely agree by looking at your pictures. The issue I have is, my eyebrows are darker than my hair! So I’m troubled at what color to fill my brows with. I don’t want to make them any darker really. Also, I have pale skin and I’ve been wondering what calor lipstick would go best with pale skin and dark blonde hair? I have blue eyes and always love making them POP! I hope you can help me out! (: I’m new to your blog and have been reading it all day work! I love everything you write!
Heather
September 21, 2013 at 4:45 pmFill in your brows with a powder brow filler the same color as your brows, not darker. My favorite is from Clinique. The little angled brush is perfect and you only need to fill in where necessary, not the whole brow. It sounds like you have a cool complexion, so any color with bluish undertones would be beautiful. Stay away from warm orangey tones. Same thing with your shadow choices. A nice plum would look amazing, with a grey liner. I hope this helps! I’m a total makeup freak!!

August 15, 2013 at 8:32 pmHi Shannon,
Everyone else I know swears by that same potion (frankly, Too Faced doesn’t work for me either) but after a couple hrs, mine stops working! I guess for everyone it’s different since all of my shadow ends up in my crease after awhile and I’ve even asked for help at Ulta! I confirmed the tiny amount I should be using and still, not working 🙁 I’d still give it a try but I don’t even have super oily skin and UD doesn’t work for me with that primer…tho I LOVE everything else of theirs! Just sayin… 🙂

August 4, 2013 at 1:54 pmNARS Larger Than Life ‘Rue Bonaparte’ is the BEST light fleshy color EVER 4 the waterline !! Yes, it’s pricey but sooo worth it b/c it goes on like a dream & STAYS on as long as u want it 2!! NARS has a white liner as well, but I find it 2 stark white even 4 my fair complexion. I’ve got the Rimmel 1 that another lady mentioned but I feel it goes on messier looking & doesn’t have the staying power of the NARS 1. Also, if u want a gorgeous pop of color–try ‘Abbey Road’ (NARS)—GORGEOUS!!!

August 9, 2013 at 10:25 amHi Cara!
I’ve never posted on your blog but I LOVE it! Seriously, I get so happy when I see you’ve put up a new post 🙂
You might have posted about this before, but do you have any posts on how to get big, pretty eyelashes without falsies? Or do you have any tips? I just don’t use falsies that often and was wondering if you had any tricks/advice for getting lush lashes without using fake lashes.
Thanks a ton 🙂

August 15, 2013 at 8:50 pmSomeone above mentioned wiping off your mascara wand with a paper towel to avoid getting a spider-y look to lashes but I have long but thin lashes and apply my mascara heavily (and they look great, like Cara’s, if I may say so!) by way of just using the bottle edge to wipe off most of the mascara on the wand. Then I dip in, re-wipe off and reapply maybe twice. The wipe off around all sides of the wand, on all sides of the bottle works wonders! Then I don’t waste mascara since it essentially ends up back in the bottle. Once I’ve done both top lids then whatever is left on the wand, I do my bottom lashes so there is no chance of clumps since by then only a small amount of mascara is left on the wand. Maybe a trick is to do the top lashes fast? Once it’s dry you have to stop or it goes bad! I go back and forth. If you’re worried you can do one at a time until you get it down. I read a tip about it that I do too but I didn’t realize I automatically did…you pull the inner lashes toward your nose and the outer lashes outward and also start as far toward your base, toward the waterline as possible. I get a lot of mascara on my contacts if I’m sloppy! I’m not a pro at many things but I have great lashes! Good luck, hope this helps and I look forward to hearing if Cara has any good advice!

August 11, 2013 at 9:48 amPlease, for the love of your beautiful eyes, please stop lining the inside of your lash line. Besides the fact that it wears off quickly because of the moisture on that very sensitive part of your eyelid, the makeup can cause styes and other gross and potentially detrimental problems with your eyeball.

September 21, 2013 at 4:52 pmMy mascara tip is this-wipe the wand off and apply the to the base of your lashes ONLY with a wiggle motion. Before it dries, comb them with a metal comb spreading the mascara to the tips. The base of your lashes will look thicker, which makes your eyes look bigger, and the ends won’t be spidery from clumps. You can repeat this technique for a more dramatic look. I also like to do this with the first coat being black and the second blue. It enhances the whites of your eyes and makes them look brighter. This works well for the bottom lashes too. No falsies needed!!

September 27, 2013 at 8:24 pmGreat post! And I love your disclaimer! You’re so right: why do some things “have to be” big (eyes and lips) and other things small (nose and chin) in order for a woman to be feminine*! Girls, you got everything you need, rock what you’re working with.
(*It’s like that Tina Fey quote: “But I think the first real change in women’s body image came when JLo turned it butt-style. That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them. And then, what felt like moments later, boom—Beyoncé brought the leg meat. A back porch and thick muscular legs were now widely admired. And from that day forward, women embraced their diversity and realized that all shapes and sizes are beautiful. Ah ha ha. No. I’m totally messing with you. All Beyonce and JLo have done is add to the laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful. Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.”)

I try for a natural (less liner and shadow) look all the time but it just never looked good. Now I gots it!! 😀 You are da bomb! <3 I feel so fabulous now … without a lot of makeup. Go fig. LOL 🙂

January 27, 2014 at 11:50 amI love the comparison picture! I typically do the dark line on the water line and I have recently been wondering how to update my eye makeup. I need eye makeup because I have light eyes and dark here. My eyes are one of my best features, but they get lost without makeup.
I have a huge phobia when it comes to the shadow under my lashes. As I’m getting older, there are more fine lines and I feel like it looks horrible and gets trapped in those lines. Is it possible I’m too old for this trick? Any suggestions?

March 3, 2014 at 12:23 pmHi, I was watching the Wendy Williams show and they were talking about Red Carpet Style Secrets. They mentioned this mascara by Too Faced called “Better Than Sex” that is supposed to be crazy good! They say one swipe of this mascara and you’ll have the long false lashes look! It costs $15 they said. Sounds great, right? I just wanted to share this information with everyone immediately! 🙂

March 6, 2014 at 10:30 pmHi ladies! Have you ever heard of a brand called Younique? The company has only been around for a little over two years but we have some amazing product! My favorite is our 3D fiber lash mascara! This stuff is a miracle in a tube! It increases you lashes by 300% That means no more false lashes and pulling out the few you have left when removing them! All of the products Younique has to offer are natural based! Come visit my site and try some of this amazing mascara that you can’t find in stores!

April 11, 2014 at 4:04 pmHi! Also wanted to say I was watching QVC today and Tarte cosmetics was on. Another mascara suggestion is Tarte Lights Camera Lashes! It gave great big false lash effects, but not stiff or crunchy. 🙂 If anyone ever tries this or the Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara please post your thoughts on it to help us all achieve beautiful lashes! The best drug store mascara I have found so far is L’Oreal Power Volume. Works very very well. Of course I’m always looking for more awesome mascaras! Miss Cara the Wonderful, if you ever use and love the mascaras by Too Faced and/or Tarte that I mentioned please let us all know immediately!! 🙂 Thank you ever so! 🙂

June 5, 2014 at 10:37 amOne of the best things I ever did for my eye look was to invest in eye primer. Before, it never mattered what I did, my shadow & liner never stayed. Now it does. I even apply it underneath my eyes as a concealer & to help my lower liner/shadow combo to stay on. And definitely eyebrow definition!! That has had a huge impact on my look!!!
