Candy Coated Sea Spray

Miracle spray you can make at home with a few simple ingredients you already have!

I have seen it before.
Gorgeous silky, smooth straight hair that is pretty awesome just as it is but…
when you want to jazz it up and get it all curly it slips out of the curl and falls right back to where you started.
I have long time been a big believer in Sea Salt Spray, but for hair textures like it just doesn’t cut it.
This spray will give you body, texture, hold and add shape and definition to your curls and isn’t drying like the basic sea spray can be.
It also gives your hair a “dirty” texture, which some people are not into, so I wanted to mention that.
It will probably not feel like you are dying to run your fingers through it but once it dries it won’t be sticky or crunchy. (you’ll get why I mention this when you see the ingredients…)

1 Cup hot water
1 Tablespoon Salt
2 Tablespoons Sugar

In an empty squirt bottle mix all three ingredients and shake well.
(shake before each use)

For Mandi’s hair I waited until it was dry, then I sprayed probably 10 squirts into her hair, moving it around so I could get it evenly coated. Getting the roots at her crown and around her face as well. On your first use start conservatively, you can always add more but subtracting is much harder.
Her hair instantly got bigger and messy looking. Next I took a 1″ curling iron and 1″ pieces of hair and wrapped it around the barrel alternating which direction (toward the face/away from the face) and sprayed a few more squirts where I felt it needed it. After I finished curling I prayed some setting hairspray then shook it out and scrunched it a bit.
It was really fun to see her with a completely different look.
I hope you guys love it!

I love it! I have uber fine hair and adding volume is always a problem. No amount of product does the trick or, if it does, lasts through the day. My hair can look great when I leave the house in the morning but after a couple of hours, it’s hugging my head again in a limp mess. (Or, it’s a frizzed out mess on humid days.) Yuck! Thanks for this great DIY product for beachy waves.

Oh thank you so much! Yes, it dries really quic but I just fluffed it up a bit until it dried (3 minutes maybe) then started curling. You don’t want the hair to get very wet at all when spraying (just coated) if it’s soaked it will be too much product:)

    Hey Guys! Mandi Here!

I just wanted to pop in and say THANK YOU for all of your sweet comments, and let you know how awesome this spray was! My hair is HORRIBLE at holding curl and these curls stayed in for DAYS (who even knew that this was possible!?) It felt a little stiff, but nowhere near as stiff as it does when I have to douse it with hairspray. I loved how piecey it was and was getting compliments on it on day 3…pulled into a messy bun! Cara is a genius!

    love your guts

You’re so funny in your videos and I love that you’re so real. Question. I’ve been using Bare Minerals for years and I feel that it doesn’t cover as much when I break out. However liquid foundation at times becomes oily and gross looking. Any tips on how to get great coverage? I use Smashbox primer and then bare minerals.

This is an AWESOME tutorial, Cara! I love that you used a natural recipe to get this type of texture. I’m definitely giving this a try because my hair has some parts that look a little dull and could use the extra oomf that this recipe gives. Never thought scrunched hair could look so fab until I saw this 🙂

Your recipe says salt. I was a little confused on the intro. I know you believe in sea salt but you said it can dry out fine hair? Is that why you add the sugar? Or do you mean use table salt? So I guess my question is table salt or sea salt?

    • Reply
      July 20, 2013 at 11:06 pm

So sorry for being confusing! Used table salt cause I was out of sea salt but I’ve used sea salt before and I like it too. I think sea salt slightly better texture wise but if all you have around is table salt, go for it:)

Tried it this weekend and LOVE it. I didn’t even curl my hair, just sprayed it in and left it looking “messy”. My hair is STICK straight with no volume. This held all day and then some. My boyfriend loved it too. He said it made my hair look much fuller, but in a subtle way. I think I oversprayed though because my hair was a little “crunchy”, must try to go a little lighter next time.

I made this after trying to find some sea salt spray at target and being unsuccessful and then literally coming home and checking your blog I found this! I had all the ingredients and immediately went in the kitchen and made it. I have medium thick fine hair that has a natural wave/curl to it. My hair was air dried and had flat frizzy waves and I sprayed it all over, scrunched, and let it dry. I could not believe the results! My hair was perfectly beachy tousled and it stayed beautifully for two days! The next day I just sprayed some dry shampoo on my roots and brushed my hair out then resprayed it and it went right back into the perfect waves. I am so excited to find something that works so well and literally costs pennies. I am also super excited to find a no heat way of styling my hair. My hair gets easily damaged by heat and I have been needing a way besides throwing it up in a braid to style it. I am in the process of growing my hair out as long as possible and just had to get about an inch and a half of damaged ends cut off.

Thanks so much for posting this it is a hair styling life changer for me!

Would this also work for curly hair? Most of the time I blow dry my hair straight and use a 2″ curling iron on it…then its so straight that it won’t hold a curl. I just want waves, not straight or very curly hair (like I have now). Should I do this after blow drying? Great look!!

I’m concerned about the sugar and the curling iron. Sugar burns, that damages the hair, my hire is old, dry, and color treated. Then how do you clean th sugar off your iron and keep the flys away? Serious question.

    • Reply
      December 9, 2015 at 7:26 pm

I didn’t use as much sugar in mine, about half actually. Because of the hot water, the sugar and salt dissolve really well so it’s not going to be like holding a blow torch to a pile of sugar. The key is to not completely wet your head with it, and also to let your hair dry before you start curling it. My hair stayed silky and sleek, even after curling, finger combing and flipping it!
