This is my beautiful friend Jen.
She bought a foundation one time like 7 years ago, used it once, decided it looked horrible and there it sat in her makeup bag for nearly a decade.
The freckles were the issue.
Either the foundation covered them up altogether and made her look like a completely different person or it looked white and uneven with freckles shining through.
I get that. I have done makeup on many freckled faced beauties and this was a conundrum that I had run into before.
One, there’s no way in HE-double-hockey-sticks that I’m going to cover up a gals sun kisses. I am a genuine freckle fanatic. I’ve drawn freckles on my face more than a few times, so I’d be crazy to go covering up the real deal. At the same time most all of us like a little evening of the skin tone.
There’s no reason a girl can’t have both.
Click HERE for side by side
My take is this:
First things first, picking a shade of sheer foundation. I like the “meet in the middle” approach meaning, you take your natural skin tone and the darker tone of the freckles and you find a foundation somewhere in between (closer to the skin tone for fewer freckles and closer to the middle for more) I find this really smooths you out whilst still letting the natural texture shine through.
Next, freckles generally show up where the sun hits you and more often than not, your neck doesn’t see much sun. That can cause your neck to be much a much lighter tone, so you could drag your foundation down to your collar bone area but that would be expensive and time consuming. Instead, I just sprayed a quick coat of Tomas Airbrush Tan on her neck and decolletage. It took one second and made it match perfectly.
Last, just spot conceal. That way even on a troubled skin day you can still get a away with the sheer foundation.
Tomas | Nars Sheer Glow | Airbrush #55 | Even Better Concealer | Concealer Brush
The rest of her makeup:
I filled her brows with MAC Charcoal Brown (it looks much warmer on her than on most peeps)
Blushed her with Maybelline Bouncy Blush In Fresh Pink
Lined her upper lid with Loreal Gel Liner in Black
Contoured her cheeks and the sides of her nose with Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder
Highlighted her brow bone, the pie under her eyes, and in the inner corner of her eyes and above her lips with my concoction which is similar to E.L.F. Shimmering Facial Whips
Then I topped her lips with Maybelline Color Whisper in Bare To Be Bold (which is usually quite neutral but everything went VERY pink on her so…)
For her hair I just ran a 1.5″ barrel through the front pieces down and away from her face to create a swept bang effect. I pout some lifting powder in her roots for body and then tousled the rest with a few curled waves and some scrunching with a little sea spray.
Hope you guys found this helpful!
FYI: I very much underestimated the response I would get from the eyebrow experiment. So it’s taking a bit longer than I expected. I wanted look at every single email before choosing the brows to makeover so that I have a really good idea of the basic questions. It’ll be done asap. But I must say, YOU GUYS ARE GORGEOUS! Seriously. It has been so much fun to put names to faces and I keep thinking “Who am I to be teaching these girls about beauty!? They should be teaching me!” Anyway, thanks so much for joining in, this is my favorite experiment ever.

June 3, 2013 at 4:49 amThis is stunning. I LOVE freckles & as always you did a beautiful but natural looking makeover. I would love to here her reaction to the process & will she continue to use the products? Very pretty before & after.

June 3, 2013 at 7:44 pmThank you! I didn’t know if she liked it or not when she left but I saw her the next day and her makeup looked almost exactly the same. I was like “wow, you did it exactly like I did!” and then she told me that she had just been extremely careful and slept on her back! So she must have liked it:) I should get her reaction straight from her though, that’s a good idea for future makeovers! Thank you!

June 3, 2013 at 5:22 amGorgeous! Love the sunkissed glow, and the way it seems all the more natural because the freckles are allowed to shine through. Also, filling in the brows made a real difference, beautifully framing the look.

June 3, 2013 at 6:30 amHi Cara, great makeover :). Im a newby here. You said you airbrushed a light coat of sheer foundation on her. Does that mean you used an airbrush machine to apply the makeup? Do I need to get an airbrusher, or is a brush ok?
liz @ btb
June 3, 2013 at 9:27 amPam, the air brush is the brush shown in the picture above. It gives an air brushed look to the skin. : )

June 3, 2013 at 7:39 amThanks, Cara! I’ve been searching for ages for a way to not mask my freckles when I wear makeup, but nothing ever seemed to work–I’ll have to give this a go. Going a darker shade scares me a little because I’m so pale, but it worked so well for Jen I have to at least try it.

June 3, 2013 at 7:39 amGorgeous as usual! I had an idea…just a thought. What if you had a Makeover Monday contest with your blog followers? Ya know, to see how us students are growing under your tutelage? We could send you our before and after pics of makeovers we have done and then you could pick your favorite or top three- depending on how many people want to do it. Geez, can you tell I want to do that? LOL! 😉
Cara
June 3, 2013 at 7:56 pmI love this idea! So Fun, I will definitely have to do it! Thank you!

June 3, 2013 at 9:27 pmLove the idea!!! And we’ll have to do it like she does, similar light and expression in the before and afters and no retouching :). Can’t wait!

June 3, 2013 at 7:39 amJust wanted to chime in that the “meet in the middle” approach to shade selection works well with hyperpigmentation as well. I had melasma with all three of my pregnancies and it never went completely away (the youngest is ten years old so I think it’s here to stay). I usually go one to two shades darker than my actual skin tone at the jaw/neck. I also just use a bronzer on my neck to blend the color in vs. a spray. My chest/shoulders are always darker so I don’t have a problem there.
Cara
June 3, 2013 at 7:59 pmI couldn’t agree more, I use the same approach! Thanks for the input!

June 3, 2013 at 8:21 amThank you so so much for doing a blog about freckles! There are so many of us speckley ladies out there and so little information! I am quite freckled and its always been an issue for me to find the right make up. I spent years trying to cover them completely which just made me look blotchy and cakey. I’ve found that mineral makeup like bare escentuals works pretty well because it’s sheer but cover redness pretty well. Thanks again!!

June 3, 2013 at 8:24 amThis is genius! With the freckles showing through it makes it look like her skin is naturally flawless.

June 3, 2013 at 8:26 amgreat idea about meeting in the middle. I love the shades you chose for her face and lips. but I do think the black eyeliner is WAY to dark for her fair skin – even for a glamorous evening out on the town. Honestly, I thought her eyes looked much prettier “before” because she is truly beautiful, but the natural shades you chose and applied for her skin enhanced her beauty instead of distracting. I think the eyeliner distracted and a brown liner or a medium shade of a color and no false eyelashes (is that what those are?) would have been much more complimentary. but It’s a great lesson with beautiful visuals – thank you!

June 3, 2013 at 8:55 amOh, my goodness! This might be my favorite makeover – EVER. She looks like a total diva, and I love that you can still see her natural skin and all her features. Accentuate, not hide. That’s how make-up should be. Amazing 😀

June 3, 2013 at 9:30 amYay for a make over with a person that has very similar coloring to me. I’ve really wanted to try HAC-ing but I’m waaaaaay paler than you and pretty much everyone else in the world so haven’t been brave enough to buy a contour color by myself in fear of getting something too dark and looking like a zombie. This post though is perfect. This is about how made up I like to look so now I can follow it step by step.
Seriously though Cara, your blog has inspired me so much. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make posts for all kinds of looks and people, it is truly appreciated.

June 3, 2013 at 9:23 pmOh Thanks Tracy! I don’t know what I;d have done without my big sister:) Of course I forgot something! I used Benefit They’re real Mascara and a couple of individual cluster lashes in the corner of her eyes (Trios in Kiss Brand)

June 3, 2013 at 2:13 pmYeah! I think you are the first ever to acknowledge freckles and have a good understanding of how to apply makeup with them. Every time I go into a store like Sephora I come out looking horrible because I am VERY freckly and the makeup artist doesn’t understand how to apply makeup with freckles. They either 1. choose a foundation that’s too dark or 2. choose a foundation that is light because if matches my neckline and it looks like I’m trying to cover the freckles up which is like putting a light foundation over a sunburn. It just doesn’t work! Thank you so much for all your advice! I love your blog.

June 3, 2013 at 3:55 pmAnother fabulous makeover, Cara! On a personal note, I have a special request: will you suggest good under eye concealers and how to do “damage control” to avoid getting the concealer to crease? I have the problem where you can see my under eye lines when I smile (hence the creasing). I’m sure you have a wonderful resolution to this very annoying issue. I’ve considered doing what Victoria Beckham does and not smile but I must say … I don’t know how the woman goes without smiling(!) – it’s nearly impossible for me. :-/

June 3, 2013 at 4:55 pmYay for makeup tutorials for freckles! I have freckles and have run into this issue before – my solution for the last several years has been mineral makeup, which when applied lightly seems to allow them to “shine through” while evening my skin out. But I will definitely be trying this, especially in the summer when they darken up and bit and it can still look a little weird. Thanks Cara!

June 3, 2013 at 9:04 pmStunning as usual! Would love to know how you got her eyelashes so long. Are they falsies? And I echo another commenter about under eye creases and how to prevent concealor from settling there. My creases are also “smiling lines.” Thanks!

June 10, 2013 at 4:58 pmStephanie, I read that you have the same problem I have with the under eye creasing. I think I found our answer(!) After extensive reading and more reading, I literally dropped what I was doing to purchase the Olay/Covergirl Primer Serum (google it). While there were some not-so-good reviews on the product, in my opinion, the good reviews outweighed the others. I used it right when I got home to be sure I didn’t get a bad reaction and … I’m lovin’ it! 🙂

June 4, 2013 at 8:24 pmHi Kara-
I noticed you didn’t line her lower lash like you usually do. I am very similar in coloring to this gorgeous gal, so I’m wondering why. Is it too harsh on fairer skin? I also noticed you didn’t line her lips. I just want to make sure I’m doing this correctly and not going around looking clownish. Thank you for your blog, I came across it a couple weeks ago, it has changed my perception of taking care of myself, and that has changed my perception of how I treat myself overall. Keep up the good work!

June 5, 2013 at 6:02 pmHi Cara! I just recently started following your blog and I love it! So many great ideas. You are very talented!
This makeover is beautiful! I have to say, though, that I think the black liner is a little too heavy for her complexion. Would it work to use brown? Or a coppery color? I’m not sure, which is why I’m asking.

June 15, 2013 at 8:25 pmLoved this makeover! Thank you! Growing up with freckles, I have always felt so insecure about my skin. As I have grown older, I have felt more confident and come to like them much more. It makes me sad when people don’t feel the same way… for instance I read this article the other day in Cosmo (link below) and was shocked they printed something that could bring so many insecurities to girls with freckles and make it sound like the best solution would be removal. It is so important to love what you’ve got, and you’re doing a great job at helping women do just that! 😉

September 12, 2013 at 11:05 amCara,
I was wondering if you could give your opinion on us freckled-face-beauties using a powder foundation. I’ve been using BareMinerals for years and really love it, but was wondering which ones might be a good alternative (spelled: cheaper). Also, I tried doing the HAC with the liquid highlighting concealer under my eyes, but it seemed like it didn’t “match” my face; is there a powder alternative that I could use?
It’s definitely harder with fair skin and freckles, so any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Crystal
September 17, 2013 at 10:23 pmI love your site. Thanks for this makeover. I stumbled upon it tonight and could definitely relate to Jen. I’ve never been a foundation wear-er due to my freckles (which I love and hate to hide). But as I’ve gotten older my skin has started to get more uneven in tone and I’ve wanted to start wearing some foundation. Now I know how to do it right. I’ve also been experimenting with highlighting and contouring thanks to your blog, so thanks for that knowledge too. I just really enjoy your work and your positive attitude about the beauty that is in everyone.

October 14, 2013 at 1:23 pmas a girl with many more freckles and what seem to be much darker, i could use more tips for HAC. i feel like i either cover up too much/it’s too dark, or it looks like there is no difference! i am also fair skinned, but my freckles cloud that as to what shade i should use as a contour. i am in LOVE with the HAC look and how incredibly effective it seems to be, but i can’t get it to work for my face.
